The following Belizean nationality applications are accepted at the Belize High Commission for final processing by the Department of Immigration and Nationality Services in Belize.

  • Nationality Application by Descent – Born to a Belizean parent who holds Belizean nationality OR a Belizean grandparent if applicant was born before September 21, 1981. (PLEASE NOTE – Where an individual has acquired his/her citizenship under the BECIP (Belize Economic Citizenship Investment Program), his/her offspring are no longer able to apply for nationality through descent.)
  • Transfer from Parent’s Belizean Nationality Certificate to individual nationality.
  • Replacement of Nationality Certificate – old certificate by way of a Memo/Letter; certification without photograph or date of birth; lost, mutilated, laminated, or damaged certificate.
  • Renunciation of Belizean Citizenship

All other nationality applications must be submitted directly to the Department of Immigration in Belize.  More info.


WHEN TO APPLY

A current nationality certificate in your individual name is mandatory in order to apply for a new passport, replacement or renewal. Given the extensive time-frame for processing, it is recommended to start the application process immediately:

  • If you have an old certificate by way of a Memo/Letter; a certificate without photograph or date of birth
  • When a child on a parent’s certificate reaches the age of 18 years
  • After the birth of a child who is to be naturalized – the child must be naturalized before applying for a passport. (Where an individual has acquired his/her citizenship under the BECIP (Belize Economic Citizenship Investment Program), his/her offspring are no longer able to apply for nationality through descent.)
  • You have a lost or damaged nationality certificate.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS
1.   Gather the documents required using the relevant checklist for your Nationality Application.

  • Form N1 for Adult application by Descent– 18 Years and above – (Where an individual has acquired his/her citizenship under the BECIP (Belize Economic Citizenship Investment Program), his/her offspring are no longer able to apply for nationality through descent.)
  • Form N3 for Minor application by Descent – under 18 years – Parent of minor must have individual nationality certificate (Transfer from parent) before applying for a child by descent. (Where an individual has acquired his/her citizenship under the BECIP (Belize Economic Citizenship Investment Program), his/her offspring are no longer able to apply for nationality through descent.)
  • Renunciation (Form E)
  • Declaration form for new, lost or damaged nationality certificate
2.   Make payment for the application.
3.   Email all documentation to the Belize High Commission for vetting
  • Scan and email to the Belize High Commission using this online form.  Attach a completed copy of the application along with all supporting documentation including proof of payment. Please use the first and surname of the applicant and the service you are applying for in the subject line. E.g. Nationality – John Smith
  • Email each application separately.
  • This vetting process is to ensure that you have all the required documentation and completed payment prior to submitting the original documentation for onward transmission to the Department of Immigration and National Services in Belize. Incomplete applications cannot be processed.
4.   Upon confirmation by the Consular Office that the submitted documents are in order, you are now ready to submit your application including all originals where required, to the Belize High Commission. (All originals submitted will be returned when the nationality certificate has been issued.) The application can be submitted by hand or by courier.
  • The application will be forwarded to the Department of Immigration and Nationality in Belize for final processing. This process can take from 7 – 12 months from this stage.
5.   When your new nationality certificate is returned to the consular office, you will be notified for collection in person or by courier.

Please note:
  • Belize’s official language is English, and all documents provided MUST either be in English or be accompanied by a certified English translation of that document.
  • Laminated documents cannot be accepted.
  • Fees charged at Belize’s Foreign Missions include administrative expenses and vary from fees charged in Belize.
